CPL Sprint Race Fires the Opening Shot as Voelklub Sindikaat Claims Victory
CPL Sprint Race 1 from Gariep Dam 165km to Bloemfontein sees Voelklub Sindikaat claim the opening race of the season. SRKJ earns the Velocity News Fanciers of the Day with three pigeons in the top 5% of 966 basketed including a 4th place finish.
The Race
The Central Provincial One Loft Race opened its 2026 season with Sprint Race 1 on 16 June, liberating 966 pigeons from Gariep Dam on the Free State and Northern Cape border over 165 kilometres to Bloemfontein. With 423 fanciers represented in the field this was a serious opening race and the result delivered exactly the kind of competitive finish the CPL is known for.
Liberation and Conditions
Liberation took place at 09:15 SAST into clean mid-winter air with temperatures between 11°C and 13°C and a westerly to north-north-westerly wind at 11 to 13km/h. Visibility was clear with hazy sunshine across the Free State interior under a stable high pressure system. By arrival in Bloemfontein conditions were fine and sunny at 15°C to 17°C with the wind shifting to east-north-easterly to northerly at 9 to 22km/h. A quartering wind at liberation settling into a northerly at arrival produced genuine racing conditions and a fast competitive result.
