Jens Van Cutsem (BE) races out of Idegem, Geraardsbergen (BE), and in just a handful of seasons has built one of the most talked about small halve fond colonies in the Hafo Dender combine. A third-generation fancier, Van Cutsem grew up around his grandfather's baskets before racing alongside his father, and finally striking out on his own in 2018. What he built from that foundation has become the story of one bloodline: 'Keti'.

A Small Team Punching Above Its Weight

Van Cutsem's colony is deliberately compact. Just 16 widowers race total widowhood, seven hens fly classic widowhood, and 12 breeding pairs supply roughly 50 youngsters a year. There is no no mass production, and no room for average pigeons. Every bird earns its place through strict selection, and the results speak for themselves season after season in provincial and national placings.

The Loft Behind The Numbers

Racing exclusively small halve fond — Toury, Sermaises, Noyon, Orleans, Ecouen, Quievrain, Lamotte and Pont St Maxence — Van Cutsem competes through club Eerlijk Duurt Langst in Viane and the wider Hafo Dender federation. His breeding philosophy is simple: focus on one discipline, keep the team small, and let genetics carry the weight. That philosophy is rooted in his own words, describing his approach as staying true to a handful of proven families rather than chasing outside blood every season.

The Foundation Bloodlines

The colony's genetic backbone draws from several respected Belgian lines: Norbert Van Isseghem, Kristof Dehandschutter, William De Blander, Alain D'Hoker, Tom Van Gaver, Philip De Maeseneer, Kurt and Dirk Weemaels, and Dimitri Denys. These families were blended carefully over three generations, but it is one hen who came to define the loft entirely.

The 'Keti' Line

Keti (B19-4177166) is the cornerstone of the Van Cutsem colony. As a racer she claimed 3rd Provincial Orleans against 21,087 pigeons, 1st Noyon, and multiple top placings at Ecouen. As a breeder she has been even more influential, producing winners while her own full siblings — including Vieze Grijzen and Dirty Gray Keti (B18-4133163) — became breeding powerhouses in their own right, siring provincial winners such as Keti's Grizzly.

Febeke's Fairytale Season

No pigeon captured that bloodline's potential more than Febeke (B22-4116188). In 2022, the young blue hen won 1st Provincial Orleans against 7,205 birds, fastest of 10,811 pigeons overall, at a velocity of 1220.00 m/min — then repeated the feat seven days later at a second Orleans race, again fastest of the entire convoy. Only 11 pigeons across the whole competition bettered 1200 m/min that day. Febeke descends directly through the Keti line, tracing back through Tom Van Gaver and Kurt and Dirk Weemaels foundation stock.

Strength Throughout The Colony

What separates Van Cutsem's colony from a one-hero story is depth. Multiple Keti-line descendants have claimed ace pigeon honours in the same seasons, including Little Febe (1st Super Ace Hafo Dender), 't Blauwken (1st Ace Hafo Dender), and New Keti (2nd Super Ace Hafo Dender). Producing several ace-calibre pigeons from one small family, rather than a single standout, is what has made this loft a consistent force rather than a one-off headline.

More Than A One-Off

The results have compounded year on year. In 2020, Van Cutsem claimed 12th National Ace oude kleine halve fond KBDB. In 2021, Keti herself was named 1st Provincial Ace Hafo Dender. By 2022 the loft delivered 42 first prizes and the Algemeen Kampioen title at Hafo Dender, and 2023 brought 37 first prizes, 1st Provincial Orleans against 16,471 pigeons with Keti's Grizzly, and 8th National champion oude en jaarse kleine hafo.
