Germany Dominates Victoria Falls World Challenge Final Race

VFWCPR 2026 Final. Guenter Goetz claims a historic US$100,000 victory over 591km winning by 15 minutes from teammate Martin Hetzel as Germany locks out the podium.

The Race That Defined a Season

On 12 June 2026 the Victoria Falls World Challenge Pigeon Race 2026 season reached its climax. Race 10 — The Final sent 1611 pigeons from Nyamapanda across 591 kilometres toward the loft. 409 fanciers from around the world had entered the season with one goal — to be standing at the top of this leaderboard when it mattered most. With a total prize fund of US$572,000 and US$100,000 for the winner this was the biggest race of the year in international pigeon racing. One pigeon rose above all others.

Liberation and Conditions

The birds left Nyamapanda at 06:30 SAST into perfect racing conditions. Clear cloudless blue skies, a crisp 13°C and a light 10km/h south-easterly breeze greeted liberation. Throughout the day the birds flew under unbroken sunshine across the central Zimbabwean flight path as mid-day temperatures climbed to 20°C to 23°C. By arrival time conditions had reached their daily peak — 24°C to 26°C under completely clear skies with excellent visibility. A light 9km/h south-easterly created a mild headwind on the final approach, testing stamina in the closing kilometres of a 591km journey that had been under way since early morning.

First Across the Line

At 15:10:12 after more than eight hours and forty minutes of flight Guenter Goetz from Germany became the 2026 Victoria Falls World Challenge champion. His pigeon ZA010 clocked 1136.08mpm over 591 kilometres to take the victory flowers and the US$100,000 first prize. It was a performance of extraordinary quality. Over a distance that tests everything — stamina, navigation and breeding quality — ZA010 arrived alone, far ahead of the field, and announced Guenter Goetz as the deserving champion of the 2026 season.

The Podium

Second place and US$60,000 went to Martin Hetzel from Schutterwald, Germany with 'Mittwoch' — meaning Wednesday in German — clocking 1103.63mpm to arrive at 15:25:30, 15 minutes and 17 seconds behind the winner. For Martin Hetzel second place in the Victoria Falls Final represents the pinnacle of a season that built quietly and powerfully through the longer distances. 'Mittwoch' was 5th at Hotspot 2, 22nd at Hotspot 4 and 15th at Hotspot 5 — consistently performing best when the distances were greatest. Behind the result sits a mouth-watering pedigree combining the American Ganus Loft bloodline on the sire side with the German Romario line from Schaerlaeckens on the dam side. The Romario line is top-class and 'Mittwoch' proved it on the biggest stage.

The Philippines on the podium of the Victoria Falls World Challenge Final is a statement about the truly global reach of this competition.

The Top 10 Arrivals

A significant gap then opened before the chasing pack arrived. 4th place went to an unpaid pigeon clocking 1027.59mpm arriving at 16:05:08. Jelle Jellema from the Netherlands claimed 5th with NL 25-1598646 at 1026.98mpm. From 6th through 10th the field compressed remarkably — all five arrivals within 1 minute and 39 seconds of each other. SWL from Kuwait took 6th with ZW25 VFWC 0304 at 1019.13mpm. Quintina Pigeons from Belgium claimed 7th with BE006 at 1019.06mpm. Bader AlJewessry from Kuwait placed 8th with ZW25 VFWC 0230 at 1018.83mpm. And Team Tom Van Gaver and Alberto Abajo from Belgium rounded out the top 10 with BE 25-4195388 at 1016.24mpm.
